Climbing Idaho Peak
Jim and Cindy, our friends, agreed to show us Idaho Peak today. We left Creston, BC, Canada shortly after 7:30 am traveling the beautiful and winding Kootenay Lake road to catch the ferry at 9 am from Kootenay Bay.
We drove to Kaslo, New Denver, then Sandon, an almost abandoned mining center then up the Idaho Peak road. Along the way were huge stands of fir, larch and cedars interlaced with mountain lakes and clear vibrant rivers. The roadsides were coloured with blue lupins, white daisies, yellow buttercups and grasses in many shades of green. Eye candy everywhere!
The Jeep clung to the edge of the mountain side as we climbed about 2000 feet from the village of Sandon through lush valleys and a view that wouldn’t quit. Check out the photo near the top of the road looking down toward the south including the community of Sandon.
We didn’t reach the peak because of snow that was too deep to get the Jeep through, and Jim didn’t bring his hiking boots. So, Idaho Peak with its 360 degree panorama and the alpine meadow that precedes it must wait for another day.
The day was magnificent in some of the most beautiful country to be found anywhere!
